Our Ash Tree Maths journey begins with our youngest Mathematicians in F1 through an introduction to numbers, patterns and connections and spatial reasoning following the Master The Curriculum Scheme of Work. As we progress to F2, we aim to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense in preparation for progression through KS1 and to support success in the future. As a school, our younger mathematicians follow the NCETM Mastering number programme of study, which allows them to develop skills in: subitising, cardinality, ordinality and counting, composition and making comparisons. All of which takes place in an authentic environment, surrounded by natural resources to explore. To further prepare our young mathematicians, we also use White Rose Education as an early introduction to problem solving and reasoning. This gives them the opportunity to familiarise themselves with concrete, pictorial and abstract representations that will be used throughout their Ash Tree Maths Journey. Take a look at the NCETM Mastering Number Programme of Study.
As our Ash Tree Mathematicians move up to Key Stage 1 and 2, their daily Maths diet includes an hour-long maths lesson with the aims and objectives of the National Curriculum at the centre of our learning. In order to develop confident Mathematicians, we follow the White Rose scheme of learning which breaks key maths concepts into smaller sequential steps. The structure of a maths lesson is consistent from Year 1 to 6 to support learners to develop their mathematical thinking; build connections between different concepts and ensure new concepts can be modelled and practised.
Vocabulary is at the heart of learning and we ensure key vocabulary is introduced, modelled and used throughout the lessons and supported to reason mathematically. At Ash Tree we use our powerful voices to make meaningful choices, this is evident in every maths lesson. Our Mathematicians have the opportunity to verbally reason and to draw upon their prior knowledge to solve mathematical problems efficiently.
Our Mathematicians also have access to a daily practice session in ‘Flashback 4’ which improves retention, develops fluency and practises using efficient, accurate methods for operations.
Our Mathematicians are supported to become proficient in core knowledge which can be recalled with speed and accuracy through revisiting of key instant recall facts, times table practice and daily flashback 4 sessions. Our Mathematicians also have opportunities to develop number sense and times table recall and fluency through: TTRockstars and Numbots. Mathletics is also available to our Mathematicians in UPKS2. Times table chanting is a key feature of the school day at every given opportunity allowing time for repetition and over learning and improved automaticity.
We want all our Mathematicians to leave Ash Tree fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, having experienced varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. Our Mathematicians by the end of KS2, will reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language. They will solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions. At Ash Tree, we are respectful communicators and resilient mathematicians.
At Ash Tree, our mathematicians are assessed formally at the end of each term using MARK: PUMA assessments. Teachers use these assessments to support our students to progress in all key areas of the national curriculum for their year group. This information is carefully analysed to create our working IP documents. Messy marking is used daily within all lessons to provide live in the moment feedback for all pupils as appropriate.
The journey of an Ash Tree Mathematician promotes an interest and enthusiasm for Maths from the earliest stages. We aim to ensure our Mathematicians understand the real-life application of Maths, such as: measuring recipes, telling the time, following a timetable, noticing patterns and thinking logically. This is a vital component to preparing our children for lives of choice, opportunity and success.
From our earliest of mathematicians to our eldest, there are many opportunities to foster a love of Maths. Every Ash Tree mathematician:
